Ignatowski's rabbit experiment opened a new path but did not identify the culprit. Episode 4 follows the investigators who deconstructed the problem: Starokadomsky and Ssobolew located the lesion in the intima; Stuckey divided animal feed into four regimens and traced the primary activity to yolk-bearing diets; Chalatow examined the livers and discovered crystalline, birefringent lipoid material common to both yolk and brain. The suspect had narrowed from animal protein to a chemical, but purified cholesterol had not yet been tested.
